Strategic Storyteller | Public Communications Expert | Veteran
From Combat Zones to Conservation Projects
My career began out of high school as a U.S. Army public affairs specialist (news writing and photojournalism). I trained at the Defense Information School in Fort Meade, Maryland, in 2003. My unit was the 122nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment. Our Motto: “Go Where Soldiers Go, See What Soldiers See, and Tell Their Story.”
In 2004, we deployed to Iraq with the 1st Cavalry Division, stationed in Baghdad. My embedded assignments mainly included western and southern Baghdad units. I also spent two weeks covering operations at the 2nd Battle of Fallujah, the largest U.S. military battle since Vietnam. I learned how to work under pressure—gathering accurate information in chaotic situations, telling human-centered stories, and representing my unit with precision and professionalism.
After my military service, I went to college, did freelance writing work, taught English abroad, then transitioned to a federal civilian career. I spent over two years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Omaha, and over eight years with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. I’ve led messaging for engineering challenges, land management, regulatory roll-outs, science initiatives, and public engagement campaigns—often at the intersection of policy, environment, and community.
